Consists of letters from William Helsley, Company G, 19th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, USA, to his wife, Mary, in Ohio. Letters describe camp conditions while in Nashville, Tennessee; the Battle of Shiloh, 1862; the Battle of Nashville, 1864; and an account of Fourth of July activities in Nashville, 1864. Also includes description of inflated prices of goods in Nashville, 1862.

Thomas was born at Newsom's Depot, Southampton County, Virginia, five miles (8 km) from the North Carolina border.
